Talkeetna is one of my favorite Alaskan communities. It’s a quaint, quirky town with surprisingly a lot to do. Talkeetna campgrounds don’t abound, but there are a couple that are worth your consideration.
Part of the fun of Talkeetna is being close to downtown where there are great restaurants and bars. Thankfully, the Talkeetna River Park Campground is just a minute walk from all of the action!

In this article, I’ll provide you with an overview of the Talkeetna River Park Campground, what amenities it has to offer, its operating season, and one other good camping option (the Talkeetna Camper Park) in the area.
Talkeetna Campgrounds: Talkeetna River Park Campground Review
The Talkeetna River Park Campground is located within a very short walk to the heart of Talkeetna. It’s also just a short 150 yard walk to the river where you can enjoy spectacular views of Denali on days when the clouds part!
Unfortunately, the Talkeetna River Park Campground does not allow RVs or camping trailers. But you can park a car at your site.
If you’re looking for Talkeetna RV parks, then consider the Talkeetna Camper Park which can accommodate nearly all RV sizes.
The campground costs $20 per night and has a maximum of stay of 14 days.
Don’t expect a lot of privacy between campsites. The campground’s main draw is its proximity to “downtown” which is literally a minute walk down the street.
Talkeetna River Park Campground Campsites
The campground has 8 campsites, and non can accommodate trailers or RVs. During peak summer, you might struggle to find a site given its popularity and the limited number of sites.
If you’re like me and prefer to know for sure you’ll have a campsite when you arrive, consider booking a site in advance at the Talkeetna Camper Park (which can also accommodate RVs)
Campfires are allowed, as are pets.
Talkeetna River Park Campground Amenities
The campground offers standard amenities such as picnic tables, fire pits, and bbq grills. I didn’t notice a source of water, but the bathroom on site would certainly provide potable water.
There is a single outhouse with at the campground.
There is also a bear resistant trash container. Be sure to keep a clean camp because even though you’re in town, bears are everywhere in Alaska, and the wilderness is literally not far from you!
Talkeetna River Park Campground Reservations
Campsites are first-come, first-serve, so you don’t need to make any advanced reservations. The campground only accepts cash or checks to pay for the reservation, so come prepared.
When is Talkeetna River Park Campground Open
The campground is open from June through September, annually.
Where is Talkeetna River Park Campground Located
The campground is located about 115 miles from Anchorage on the Parks Highway and then down the Talkeetna Spur Road. It takes approximately 2 hours to reach the campground from Anchorage.
Summary
Talkeetna River Park Campground is a relatively non-descript campground in the heart of Talkeetna. If you’re looking for easy access to the bars, restaurants, and shops that Talkeetna is known for, then this is a great location.
But if you want more solitude, or are camping with your RV or camping trailer, this campground is not for you. Instead, consider the Talkeetna Camper Park which is still close to downtown, but about a mile away.
